Conoclinium coelestinum.

Blue Mistflower, also known as Blue Boneset and Wild Ageratum, is a perennial wildflower native to the eastern and central regions of the United States, where it can often be found growing on the edges of woods, along stream and riverbanks, and in wet meadows and ditches.

Plant typically grows to around 1 to 3 feet in height and spreads to form dense clusters or clumps. Its slender, upright stems are adorned with attractive, lance-shaped leaves that are medium to dark green in color, creating a beautiful backdrop for the flowers. The foliage has a slightly hairy texture.

Delicate, powder-blue blossoms emerge in late summer or early fall. The flower heads are composed of numerous tiny florets that create a fluffy, cloud-like appearance, reminiscent of mist, hence the name "mistflower." These blooms form rounded clusters at the top of the stems, creating a striking visual display.

The nectar-rich flowers act as a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it an excellent addition to wildlife gardens, butterfly gardens, or naturalized areas.

  • Growing Tips

Direct sow in late fall by lightly pressing the seeds into the soil's surface. For spring planting, mix seeds with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 30 to 60 days (cold stratification) before sowing.

To start indoors, cold stratify the seeds for 30 to 60 days. Sow seeds on the soil's surface in small, individual pots or in a seed tray, then place seeds in a warm, bright location. Keep soil moist until germination, which should occur within 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed.

  • A Note on Cold Stratification

These seeds require cold, moist stratification. To naturally stratify the seeds, plant outdoors late fall on a weed-free site and allow seeds to overwinter.

To artificially stratify the seeds, place the seeds and a moist medium (such as a damp paper towel, coffee filter, sand, or vermiculite) in a labeled, sealed plastic bag and store in a refrigerator (33-40°F) for the amount of time noted on the growth chart before sowing.
